After having lost the war in Russia, Napoleon Bonaparte, declared “universal peace,” hoping to calm the Europeans with such a noble goal. The Austrians, the Brits, the Prussians and even the Russians seemed to back him up. But for them peace meant, first, the elimination of Napoleon. –Soon those European powers would unite to defeat the French, and the Cossacks would march on through the streets of Paris. In 1939 en British chancellor, Neville Chamberlain, returning from a meeting with Adolf Hitler to declare the success of his diplomatic initiative. “I have appeased Mr. Hitler” declared. Less than forty eight hours later the German army would cross the Polish border, thus starting the Second World War. A couple of years later the Japanese ambassador in Washington assured that his country “had every intent to keep the peace with the USA,” just as Japanese airplanes left their island bases en route to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In the Middle East in general, and in the Arab-Israeli conflict in particular, we find plenty of examples like those of above. – Dozens of agreements have been proposed, and many have been signed, without the most remote intention to fulfill them. But idealists and deluded ones, progressivists, the so-called “pacifists” and the rest of that crowd applauded each time, as if memory would vanish in the euphoria of illusions.		El medio oriente en general, y el conflicto árabe israelí en particular, está lleno de ejemplos como los de arriba. –Docenas de acuerdos han sido propuestos, y muchos firmados, sin que sea ni remotamente posible el cumplirlos. One must ask, then, when and how will we recognize true peace? To answer this it is first necessary to understand when does peace flourish.		Cabe preguntarse, entonces, ¿Cuándo y como reconocemos la paz verdadera? Para responder esto es necesario primero entender cuando se da la paz.

As all illnesses need to be healed, not merely have their symptoms hushed, it is necessary to understand the root cause, and only if it is extirpated completely can the problem be solved.		Como todas las enfermedades, que es necesario curarlas, no simplemente disimular los síntomas, hay que entender la causa raíz, y solo si se la extirpa completamente, se puede solucionar el problema.

The cause of the endless war lies on a wrong premise that has lead to the worsening of things. Diplomacy has not solve the problem at all, on the contrary, it has been aggravating it for already too many years.		La causa de la interminable guerra consiste en una premisa equivocada que ha conllevado al empeoramiento de las cosas. La diplomacia en nada a colaborado a solucionar el problema, por el contrario, lo ha venido agravando ya por demasiados años.

Palestinian Arab nationalism was designed, from the start, to counter Zionism. In its eagerness to “liberate Palestine,” i.e., to destroy the country that dwells on the territory: Israel. Not only Hamas, but the very own PLO have as a goal the destruction of Israel. The only difference is in the method. For Hamas it is a direct military objective, while for the PLO it is a military objective with alternate stages of diplomatic and bellicose activity. To a diplomatic offensive, a bellicose one follows, and to a bellicose offensive, a diplomatic one follows.		El nacionalismo árabe palestino fue diseñado, desde un principio, para contrarrestar al sionismo y, en su afán de “liberar Palestina”, destruir al país que ocupa el territorio: Israel. No solo Hamás, sino la misma OLP, tienen por objetivo la destrucción de Israel. La única diferencia radica en el método. Para Hamás es un objetivo directamente militar, para la OLP es un objetivo militar que alterna faces diplomáticas y bélicas. A una ofensiva diplomática sigue una ofensiva bélica, y a una ofensiva bélica sigue una ofensiva diplomática.

We have learned this and seen it too many times. Who does not remember the so-applauded foundation of the Palestinian Authority, with an Arafat flown in from Tunis escorted by the Heil Avir, Israel’s Air force? Soon the second Intifada would stain the Land of Israel’s soil with innocent blood, victims of the bellicose offensive. And then there was another round of diplomatic agreements, and another Intifada. And we have just witnessed yet another diplomatic offensive, and now the unification, as long as it lasts, of Hamas and the PLO. They said to have renounced violence forever. Is that perhaps for the good of all and for true peace? Perhaps for the peace and welfare of the Jews and Israel? What was and continues to be the raison d’être of both organizations? What could be the reason why they meet and with what goal do they concoct this “peace”?		Lo aprendimos ya y lo vimos muchas veces. ¿Quién no recuerda la tan aplaudida fundación de la Autoridad Palestina, con un Arafat traído de Túnez con una escolta del Jeil Avir, la fuerza aérea israelí? Pronto la segunda Intifada abría de manchar el suelo de la Tierra de Israel con sangre de las inocentes víctimas de esa ofensiva bélica. Y luego hubo otra ronda de acuerdos diplomáticos, y otra Intifada. Y acabamos de presenciar otra ofensiva diplomática, y ahora la unificación, mientras dure, de Hamás y de la OLP. Dicen que han renunciado a la violencia para siempre. ¿Acaso para el bien de todos de por la paz verdadera? ¿Acaso para la paz y el bienestar de los judíos y de Israel? ¿Cuál fue y sigue siendo el propósito de ser de ambas organizaciones? ¿Para qué se pueden estar reuniendo y con qué objetivo pueden estar tramando esta “paz”?

My Response to the recognition by the State of Peru of a non-existent Arab Palestinian State	nnn	Mi respuesta al reconocimiento official del Estado Peruano a un estado árabe-palestino inexistente

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Relations issued the following press release: Peru Recognizes a Palestinian State		El ministerio de relaciones exteriores del Peru emitió el siguiente comunicado de prensa: El Perú reconoce al Estado Palestino

1. The United Nations General Assembly voting in 1947 in which Peru voted in favor of the “partition of Palestine” does not constitute a precedent of support for an Arab Palestine. The Palestine of back then was a British protectorate held in a temporary manner between the dissolution of the Ottoman Turkish empire in 1917 and the national resolution that would bring about the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. This was ratified, to begin with, with the Balfour declaration in 1917, which favored the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine. In 1947 the Arab countries and the Arabs of the above-mentioned protectorate vehemently opposed such partition and refused any recognition of the State of Israel. With that it was the Arabs themselves who rejected the partition and declare as their goal the destruction of any Jewish national entity on the Holy Land, which they held as a priority greater than the exercise of free self-determination of the Arabs themselves.		1. La votación de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas en 1947 en las que el Perú votó a favor de la “participación de Palestina” no constituyen un antecedente de apoyo a una Palestina árabe. La Palestina de aquel entonces era un protectorado británico sostenido de manera interina entre la disolución del imperio Turco-Otomano en 1917 y la resolución nacional que llevaría al establecimiento del Estado de Israel en 1948. Esto fue ratificado para empezar con la declaración Balfour en 1917 que favorecía el establecimiento de un hogar nacional judío en Palestina. En 1947 los países árabes y los habitantes árabes del protectorado susodicho se opusieron vehementemente a tal partición y se negaron a todo reconocimiento del Estado de Israel. Con esto fueron los propios árabes los que rechazaron la partición y declararon por objetivo la destrucción de toda entidad nacional judía sobre tierra santa, cosa que sostenían como prioridad por encima del ejercicio a la libre autodeterminación propia como árabes.

Moreover, the PLO declared as their own objective since its foundation in 1964 that the territories on the west bank of the Jordan river was not of their concern for being these “part of Jordan”. The PLO had as a goal, hence, the destruction of Israel proper. It is worth of mention that Jordan resign in 1994 from any territorial claim over Judea and Samaria, on the west bank of the Jordan river.		Más aun, la OLP declaró como objetivo propio desde su fundación en 1964 que los territorios a la margen occidental del río Jordán no les incumbía por ser estos “parte de Jordania”. La OLP tenía por objetivo, pues, la destrucción del Estado de Israel propio. Cabe mencionar que Jordania renunció en 1994 a todo reclamo territorial sobre los territorios de Judea y Samaria, en la margen occidental del Jordán.

2. The current offensive on the diplomatic front is not a step towards peace, but a manipulative maneuver by the PLO with the goal of exerting pressure on Israel in order to obtain concessions from it without having to give anything in exchange. The apparent abandonment of violence on the side of the PLO is of temporary nature, if even real, and a strategic move to obtain territorial advances and to grab positions that compromise the security and integrity of Israel and of it's inhabitants.		2. La presente ofensiva en el frente diplomático no es un paso hacia la paz, sino una maniobra manipulativa por parte de la OLP con el objetivo de ejercer presión sobre Israel para obtener concesiones de este sin tener que dar nada a cambio. El aparente abandono de la violencia por parte de la OLP es de naturaleza temporal, si acaso real, y estratégico para conseguir el avance territorial y la toma de posiciones que comprometen la seguridad e integridad de Israel y de sus habitantes.

3. The coexistence of which the Ministry of Foreign Relations makes reference in its January 24th release is by no means the goal of the PLO, and granting them diplomatic recognition does not lead to peace.		3. La coexistencia a la que hace referencia el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores en su comunicado del 24 de enero pasado no es en absoluto la meta de la OLP, y el garantizarles el reconocimiento diplomático no conlleva a la paz.

4. The PLO is not a state, and the Palestinian Authority is not a plenipotentiary government. There is not, thus, any real basis for granting such recognition. Peru has extended recognition to a country that does not exist, and is in fact supporting an organization of terrorist precedents, as well as violent and direct violation of Human Rights and of International Law.		4. La OLP no es un estado, y la Autoridad Palestina no es un gobierno plenipotenciario. No hay, por lo tanto, fundamento real para garantizarles tal reconocimiento. 5. The defensible borders of Israel cannot be placed at nine miles off the Mediterranean shores. Such temporary border only existed because of a cease-fire line of the exhausted armies and the resulting armistice in 1949. It was precisely because in the eagerness to obtain defensible territory that Israel liberated the territories of Judea and Samaria, and until the depression of the Jordan valley, which constitute a natural and defendable border. The border that guarantees security is, thus, that of the Jordan valley on Israel's eastern border.		5. Las fronteras defendibles de Israel no pueden quedar a catorce kilómetros de la costa del Mediterráneo. Tal frontera interina solo existió por causa del cese al fuego de los agotados ejércitos en el el resultante armisticio en 1949. Fue precisamente por el afán de obtener territorio defendible que Israel liberó los territorios de Judea y Samaria, y hasta la depresión del valle del Jordán, que constituye una frontera natural y defendible. Las fronteras que garantizan la seguridad son, pues, las del valle del Jordán en el oriente de Israel.

6. The peace process has failed in countless occasions because of the unwillingness of recognizing the PLO claims, which does not consist of the concept of coexistence, but is rather designed for the destruction of the State of Israel.		6. El proceso de paz ha fracasado en oportunidades sin cuenta por faltar a reconocer la realidad del reclamo de la OLP, que no es consistente con el concepto de coexistencia, sino que está diseñado para la destrucción del Estado de Israel.

But more worrisome even is the blindness about the results of Israeli concessions: the welcoming to Arafat in 1993 would result in the violent Intifada of the 1990s. The formal retreat by Israeli troops from southern Lebanon in 2000 and from the Gaza Strip in 2005 lead to the power takeover by fundamentalist groups which are extremely dangerous. Territorial concessions did not, thus, lead to peace. Such is the threat exposed through the widely demonstrated tragic precedents. If Peru is interested in really accomplishing peace, it would refuse to recognize a Palestinian Arab State unless Israel itself grants such recognition.		Pero más preocupante es la ceguera a los resultados de las concesiones israelíes: la bienvenida a Arafat in 1993 resultaría en la violenta Intifada de los 1990s. La retirada formal de tropas israelíes del sur del Líbano en el 2000 y de la Franja de Gaza en el 2005 conllevaron a la toma de poder por parte de grupos fundamentalistas islámicos sumamente peligrosos. La concesión territorial no condujo, pues, a la paz. Tal es la amenaza expuesta con los ya ampliamente demonstrados antecedentes trágicos. Si el Perú se interesa realmente en conseguir la paz, debería rehusarse a reconocer a un estado árabe palestino a menos que Israel mismo otorgara tal reconocimiento.

By the exposed above and with the fundamental premise about the PLO's war intentions, that we exhort the government of Peru to revert its decision on the recognition of a Palestinian State.	nnn	Por lo expuesto arriba, y con la prémisa fundamental de las intenciones bélicas de la OLP, exhortamos al gobierno en el peruano a revertir la decisión de reconocimiento de un estado Palestino.

Noah/Noha of Egypt - Noah/Noha de Egipto

As I write these lines I can only wonder about the welfare and whereabouts of the woman we've come to know in Facebook as “Noah Hassid” (the “h” at the end of her name is a probably unnecessary addition, most Israeli women with that name will render it “Noa”). In her Egyptian papers she is Noha Hashad, a nuclear physics professor at Beni Suef University.	nnn	Al escribir estas líneas solo puedo preguntarme por el bienestar y paradero de la mujer a la que hemos llegado a conocer en Facebook como “Noah Hassid” (la “h” al final de su nombre probablemente no es necesaria, la mayoría de las mujeres israelíes con eso nombre lo escriben “Noa”). En sus papeles egipcios ella es Noha Jashad, una profesora de física nuclear de la universidad Beni Suef.

For the past several years Noha, who left the Islamic faith with which she was raised (albeit in a mostly secularized way), has been looking into the ancestral faith of her father, whose family went from Tunisia to Egypt and apparently had Jewish roots. Such a task was not easy, as Egypt does not allow such freedoms as letting people to choose or even explore other faiths. The once affluent Jewish community of Egypt left overnight in 1956 under general and imminent threat of pogrom threat. Noah became defiant, and in a public declaration to one of Egypt's most read newspapers, she declared that “the Land of Israel belongs to G-d's chosen people, the Jews”. She was misquoted as saying "the land of Palestine...”. She was then arrested and jailed; held without charges, even beaten, then let go without explanation. The newspapers justified her arrest saying that she "intended to leave Egypt for Israel probably with the intent to convert to Judaism". That alone is the breach of an unwritten Egyptian law. Using Facebook as a powerful tool to reach out to the world, Noah Hassid, as she calls herself in this media, has befriended many Jewish activists around the world and told us her story, her struggle, her pain, and her commitment to go on, against all odds. She wants to be allowed to leave Egypt, with her son (who, like her, intends to go back to their ancestral faith). Neither Noah nor Yousef, her son, are Jews by Halacha (Jewish law), as their ancestry is patrilinear. Noah's mother's family have disowned her and remain recalcitrant to her wishes to convert to Judaism. They see it as a betrayal to the family and a blasphemy to their Islamic faith. Noah made me aware of the horrors of a repressive regime, and how Egypt portrays itself as a western-friendly democracy, in reality being neither -- only a money-grabbing, manipulative tyranny. Mubarak, Noah taught me, aids and abets terrorists under the table in order to "fight them" in public to appear, in the eyes of the west, that he's necessary as an element in the War Against Terror. It makes a lot of sense, in a tightly-held police state, the Muslim Brotherhood thrives as weapons and ammunition makes its way to Hamas in Gaza through Egyptian territory. If Mubarak really wanted, the Muslim Brotherhood would have been so repressed it would have ceased to function, and Hamas would have been rendered powerless.		Noah me hizo tomar conciencia de los horrores de un régimen represivo, y de como Egipto, que se retrata como una democracia amiga del Occidente no es en realidad nada de eso, sino solamente una tiranía manipuladora y arrebatadora de fondos. Mubarak, Noah me enseñó, asiste y fomenta a terroristas por debajo de la mesa para poder “luchar contra ellos” ante el público para así aparentar, en los ojos de Occidente, ser un elemento indispensable en la Guerra Contra el Terror. Esto hace mucho sentido. En un país policial de ajustado escrutinio, la Hermandad Islámica prospera y armamentos y municiones pasan a Hamás en Gaza por medio de territorio egipcio. Si Mubarak de verdad quisiera, la Hermandad Islámica hubiese sido reprimida al punto de dejar de funcionar, y Hamás hubiese sido desarmado y carecería de poder.
Nothing in Egypt is what the regime's propaganda machine portrays it to be. Even the peace with Israel is subject to the whim of the ailing tyrant.		Nada en Egipto es como lo que la maquinaria de propaganda del régimen lo retrata. Incluso la paz con Israel está sujeta al antojo del ya débil tirano.
I confirmed Noah's story after talking to Esty Tirosh, an Israeli professor at Ben Gurion University, who has been in touch with Noah for over 10 years and is very familiar with her case -- Esty is not on Facebook and her personal references lead me to believe every word she says. As of yesterday, Noah found out she couldn't access her Facebook -- no one in Egypt could. Then she was out reach of the Internet (even her email is blocked). I lost my cell phone on Thursday morning, and by the time I recovered it and tried to call her number (in my cellphone's memory), she wasn't answering either her home phone or at her cell phone. As of this morning, it appears that all cellphone service is out in Egypt. A recording in Arabic and perfect English says that “this number is not available” – I can't even leave a message.		Ayer Noah se dio cuenta que no podía accesar a su Facebook – nadie en todo Egipto podía hacer eso. Luego se encontró fuera del alcance del Internet (hasta su correo electrónico está bloqueado). Egypt is behind a smoke screen. Media is in a blackout. The army is in the streets, and the regime is free to oppress and repress as it wishes. This is to me reminiscent of acts done by Latin American dictators in the 1970s, where I grew up. Is Mubarak doing what Somosa did in Nicaragua in the days prior to the Sandinista take over? Is he going to bomb Cairo and fill it's streets with blood? Is he going to pull a Pinochet-style mass purge of opposition and murder tens of thousands to show them who's boss? He's certainly pulling what Velazco Alvarado did in Lima in February of 1975 and send the army in the streets to enforce a tight curfew, forcing the masses to disband or face the troops and tanks with orders to shoot (of this I have personal memories). In a media blackout, this won't have the world-wide heroic tone of the Tiananmen Square repression.		Egipto está detrás de una cortina de humo. Hay apagón total de medios de comunicación. Nine Narrow Miles, a 1980 short documentary about the strategic importance of the territories of Judea and Samaria, on the west bank of the Jordan River. Without them Israel would be vulnerable to an attack from the east. When the Armistice of Rhodes was signed in 1949, Israel's borders placed the bulk of the population right under the guns of the Jordanian army. In it's narrower point, the width of the country was merely nine miles from the Samarian hills to the Mediterranean.

Judea and Samaria were won in the 1967 Six-Day War. If the territories were to be given up to the Arabs, the dangerous and disadvantageous situation would once again pose a threat to Israel's densely populated coast.

Thus I am writing these lines, hoping to cast some light despite the darkness of propaganda and political manipulation that confuses so many people. The evil of terrorism is so blatant, so obvious, that it would be easy to point to it as the greatest danger to safety. Add to that the militaristic power of Hizbullah, or even more serious, that of Iran. Isn’t that the greatest security concern? The very basics of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel depend on the Jewish hold on the land: No land in Jewish hands would mean no Jewish sovereignty in Eretz Yisrael, period. The purpose of Arab terror is to intimidate Jews into leaving the land behind. Our loss is then their gain. But the painful reality of Arab terror is only a means to an end. Arabs seek a Judenrein land. Terror is only a means to that end. If a different tool becomes available, they will use it. Their goal remains the same, and so does their option to revert to violence whenever the alternative becomes unavailable or even too sluggish for their taste. Far from appeasing, land surrender provides Arabs with the feeling that their goal of an Eretz Yisrael free of Jews is closer, and within reach. The likelihood of violence increases when concessions are put on the table. The danger of war and of great loss of life, is perpetuated by the so-called “peace process”. It is sad to say this, but I was not surprised when I learned of the murder of the Yeshiva bachurim at Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav, or of fatalities in Sderot and Ashkelon. I knew something like that was coming. The completely irresponsible, even suicidal attitude of the Olmert / Kadima regime has produced a state of danger so grave, it is a wonder such a tragedy didn’t happen earlier, or – rachamana litzan – more often.		Es triste decir esto, pero yo no me sorprendí cuando me enteré del asesinato de los bajurei yeshivá de Merkaz HaRav, o de los muetos en Sderot y Ashkelón. Sabía que algo así se venía. Currently Olmert is offering the Arabs 90% of the remaining liberated territories of Judea and Samaria, and even the vitally strategic Golan Heights. His excuse? There is a danger of an up-coming war. The con game is clear. The proposed solution would actually precipitate an up-coming catastrophe, and in no way would it grant peace, security or in any way improvement the situation . The long history of a people that sprouts from a single family, thirty seven centuries ago, is not free from the onslaught of recurrent threats to its very existence. The great paradox of its survival, the Jewish People is instructed not to rely on miracles, yet survives through a permanent miracle. Within the scope of memory, a memory of witnesses and protagonists still alive as these lines are being written, two major instances have defied the survival of the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: the Holocaust, and Assimilation. These two palpable realities sum up the two necessary elements necessary for Jewish survival: the physical and the spiritual realms. Por casi 60 años el pueblo judío ha contado con el establecimiento físico de un gobierno judío en la tierra de Israel. Por más de 40 años – mas, con las justas – ese gobierno establecido ha incluido en su soberanía el corazón de nuestra tierra dada (y prometida) por Di-s. Pero una plaga devastadora está consumiéndonos desde las entrañas, corroyendo la base de tal concepto.
Let us understand: It so happens that every Jew's life is connected to the land of Israel, wherever in the world that Jew may be. The year that has just started in the Jewish calendar, 5768, is a Sabbatical year, a Shmitah year. During this year, the seventh of a recurrent cycle kept since the revelation of the Torah thirty three centuries ago, the Land of Israel must rest. That means that agricultural work on Jewish-owned land in Eretz Yisrael must cease for the whole year.		Entendamos: Sucede que la vida de todo judío está conectada a la tierra de Israel, en cualquier lugar del mundo en el que el judío esté. El año que acaba de empezar en el calendario judío, el 5768, es un año sabático, un año de shmitá. Debts accumulated during this year are transferred to a Beit Din, a rabbinical court that will be in charge of seeing them paid. That makes sense for Jews living in the Land of Israel, and working in the land. Yet Jews in the Diaspora have, just as well, signed the pruzbul document of debt-transferring just before Rosh HaShanah. We may or may not see that connection in a physical way. The physical aspect of our survival constitutes, as mentioned above, only one dimension. But the connection between the land and our physical survival is empirically evident. When we were precipitated into the present Exile, some nineteen centuries ago, an enormous amount of lost Jewish lives paved the roads out of the Land of Israel. We must remember that essential axiom: not to rely on miracles. That is to say, we are not to expect anything good to come from keeping silent, from allowing confusion, fear, or from absurd and paralyzing moral relativism. The fact is that if we simply sit still and allow the farce of “peace process” to go on, we will have no one but ourselves to blame for the disaster coming our way when the events unfold. Lo he dicho tantas veces, que bien cabría preguntarse para qué insistir. La evidencia es abrumadora, y sería difícil argumentar que quienes todavía se enfrascan en negarla o tergiversarla tengan la esperanza de rectificarse: La rendición (o “retirada unilateral”, en el newspeak demofrénico tan de moda en entre políticos israelíes) del territorio de las comunidades de Gush Katif (Franja de Gaza) y de Tzfón HaShomrón (Samaria del Norte) fue uno de los peores errores intencionales de la historia moderna de Israel.		I have said it so many times that it is fit to ask why to insist any further. The evidence is overwhelming and it would be difficult to argue that those who today still persist denying or twisting it have any hopes of straightening themselves out: The surrender (or “unilateral withdrawal,” in the demophrenic newspeak so fashionable among Israeli politicians) of the territory of Gush Katif (Gaza Strip) and Tzfon HaShomron (Northern Samaria) was one of the worst intentional mistakes of Israel's modern history.

Because the Kadima regime, the guilty party for the current fiasco, is still going on the same wrong way, bringing tragedy after tragedy to the people, the land, and the state of Israel.

The tragedy of the wrongful abandonment of the land of the Jewish residents of Gush Katif into enemy hands carries along with it, several conceptual errors which today have an echo even among scholars. Such is the terrible mistake of declaring that that which was abandoned was not part of Eretz Yisroel. Rachamanah litzlan!		La tragedia del totalmente equívoco abandono de las tierras de los habitantes judíos de Gush Katif a manos enemigas acarrea, además, muchísimos errores de concepto que aun hoy hacen eco hasta entre los eruditos. Uno de esos terribles errores es el de afirmar que lo que se abandonó no era parte de Eretz Israel. ¡Rajamana litzlán!

There is, of course, a choir of mumbling parrots, relativists, manipulators and ignoramuses, who even on the face of the events of the events of the last fifteen months, still repeat their pathetic foolishness which all but deepen us into stifling darkness. The Torah Parasha read in synagogues the world-over this Shabbot, Toldos, makes very clear the Jewish right, even duty, to settle this corner of the proper, sacred Jewish soil. Thus, the fact that Avrohom Avinu lived for many days in the land of the Philistines (Bereishis / Genesis 21:34), could perhaps be construed as though Avrohom Avinu had left, then Eretz Yisroel. Avrohom had been born in Chutz La’aretz, and in times of want he descended into Egypt. The Parasha comes to clarify that Yitzchok Avinu also lived in lands occupied by the Philistines. Not only in the Negev, but in Gerar (26:1,6), and in Nahal Gerar (26:7). It passes through biblical Gerar, and ends up in the Mediterranean, shortly after uniting its waters with those of Nahal Besor. The place were Nahal Gerar’s waters meet the Mediterranean is a couple of miles south of Gaza city, very near the former group of Jewish communities built during the past thirty plus years, known collectively as Gush Katif. The same miracle took place, once again, in Gush Katif, where in Jewish hands a multi-million agricultural industry blossomed, placing the produce of Gush Katif in the markets of Europe and America. Today that land, in Arab hands, turns again into the driest of deserts. The only thing worked through the ground are the carved tunnels, whose only use is for the Hamas leadership to smuggle weapons aimed to inflict damage on the Jewish population of neighboring Sderot, on the other side of the infamous green line. Yitchok Avinu could very well have stayed in Hevron, and brought there the miracle of finding water in deep wells. But his self sacrifice, the act of going into the dangerous Peleshes (Philistea), where he had to hide the fact that Rivka was his wife for fear of being killed at the hands of jealous savages, and his devotion having settled for over twenty years in the dry wilderness, working there with enormous labor to make it blossom, all that was done in order to give us a message, a legacy very relevant in our days:		Itzjak Avinu bien podría haberse quedado en Hevrón, y realizar allí el milagro de encontrar agua en pozos profundos. In the words of the scholarly author of the Sifsei Chachamim Torah Commentary on the verse 26:12: “דהא גרר הוי נמי ארץ ישראל”, “Gerar, too, is Eretz Yisroel.” It is to be understood, obviously, that the entire Gerar-Besor Valley is Eretz Yisroel, including the Gaza Strip. As a matter of fact, Eretz Yisroel extends much farther to the west. It is a matter of controversy amongst authorities whether it is up to the El Arish River, or the very Nile. Today, Gush Katif, may it be rebuilt speedily, is, for all practical purposes, as much Eretz Yisroel as are Yerushalayim, Hevron, Hadera and Tel Aviv. Hence, the purpose of beginning the Torah with the story of the creation of the universe is to make it clear that G-d, the Creator of all that there is, is who decided from the beginning of it all that the land of Israel belongs to the Chosen People, the Jewish People.

Es fácil perderse en los detalles. Creo necesario ahora revisar algunos asuntos básicos, sin escrúpulos ni pelos en la lengua para decir las cosas como se debe. Vamos por partes:

It is easy to get lost in the details. I see it is now necessary to review some basic matters, without any hesitating or wavering, to say things straightforwardly. Lets proceed point by point:

El pueblo elegido: el pacto entre Di-s y el pueblo judío

Am Israel, el pueblo judío, es el pueblo elegido por Di-s. Es patético que quienes más nos lo hagan recordar sean nuestros aborrecedores. Y estos, nadando en un mar de ignorancia y mala información, solo expresan una visión torcida y tergiversada del asunto.

El pueblo judío fue elegido por Di-s para una misión clave en el esquema de la creación: servir a Di-s mediante el cumplimiento de los 613 preceptos (en hebreo: mitzvot, מִצְוֹת), y ser la luz de las naciones. Para esto Di-s nos dio los elementos que necesitamos: nos abasteció de un alma judía particular, creada de la esencia de Si Mismo (véase el inicio del segundo capítulo del Séfer Likutei Amarim Tanya).

Desde los días de Abraham circuncidamos a nuestros hijos como señal del pacto que el primero de los patriarcas hizo con Di-s. En ese mismo pacto quedó establecido nuestro vínculo eterno con la tierra de Israel.

Ese pacto, y ese vínculo, ha sido heredado de generación en generación, desde los tres patriarcas, hasta nuestros días. El vínculo judío con la tierra de Israel jamás ha sido quebrado. Aun en la más oscura hora del exilio, en el lugar más perdido y lejano, el judío recuerda a Sión, ruega al Cielo por su reconstrucción, y por el reestablecimiento de la soberanía de su pueblo sobre esa, su verdadera patria.

Tres veces al día, al recitar la plegaria, el judío torna su rostro hacia Jerusalén, la ciudad sagrada y eterna capital.

The Chosen People: The Covenant Between G-d and the Jewish People

Am Yisrael, the Jewish people, are G-d’s chosen nation. It is pathetic that those who bring it to our attention the most are those who hate us. And they, swimming in a sea of ignorance and bad information, only express a view that is both, twisted and distorted.

The Jewish people were chosen by G-d for a key mission in the scheme of creation: to serve G-d through the fulfillment of the 613 commandments (in Hebrew: Mitzvos מִצְוֹת), and to be a light unto the nations. For this, G-d gave us all the elements that we need: He provided us with a unique Jewish soul, which He created from His own essence (see the beginning of the second chapter of the Sefer Likutei Amarim Tanya).

From the time of Abraham we circumcise our children as a sign of the covenant that the first of the forefathers made with the Almighty. That very same covenant established our eternal link with the land of Israel.

The covenant and the link were inherited from generation to generation, from the three forefathers to our day. The Jewish ties with the land of Israel have never been broken. Even in the darkest hour of the exile, in the farthest and most remote of places, the Jew recalls Zion, and asks the Heavens for its reconstruction and for the reestablishment of the sovereignty of his people to their true motherland.

Three times a day, while reciting his prayers, the Jew turns his face toward Jerusalem, the sacred city and eternal capital.

La Tierra de Israel y los judíos: ¿ideología laica o deber religioso?

Hay quienes, en su patética ignorancia, creen que todo empezó con Herzl. No saben, pobrecitos, que muchos años antes de que don Teodoro pensara siquiera en escribir El Estado Judío, el rav Kalischer ya había publicado Drishat Tzión, defendiendo firmemente el concepto del retorno físico del pueblo judío a la santa Tierra de Israel, y que esto debería suceder antes de la venida del Mashíaj.

Herzl bien podría haber optado por crear en Uganda o en la Argentina su “hogar nacional judío”, como propuso de manera alternativa. Pero el judío sabía distinguir entre un mero transplante más en el exilio, y el Retorno a la patria, a Eretz Israel. Eso fue lo que marcó la diferencia.

Durante los siglos del exilio, el judío nunca olvidó a Sión. ¿Como podría olvidar un elemento tan importante de su pacto ancestral con Di-s? Ese es el verdadero sionismo, y sin esa verdad Herzl no habría sido sino una breve nota al pie de página en algún oscuro y rebuscado volumen de curiosidades históricas.

A pesar del exilio impuesto sobre el pueblo judío, y a pesar del tiempo y la distancia, el judío nunca dejó atrás su vínculo con la Tierra Prometida. Todo judío que haya recitado siquiera una sola vez en su vida sus plegarias con sinceridad de corazón, ha rogado por el retorno de su pueblo a la tierra de Israel, por la reconstrucción de Jerusalén, del Templo, por la Redención y por la verdadera paz, la Paz Divina.

The Land of Israel and the Jews: Secular Ideology or Religious Duty?

There are those who, in their pathetic ignorance, believe that it all began with Herzl. They do not know, poor souls, that many years before Mr. Theodor even thought of writing The Jewish State, horav Kalischer had already published Drishat Tzion, defending firmly the concept of the physical return of the Jewish people to the Holy Land of Israel, and that this should happen before the arrival of the Moshiach.

Herzl could well have opted to create his Jewish National Home in Uganda or in Argentina, as he alternatively proposed. But the Jew knew how to differentiate between merely another uprooting in exile, and the Return to the motherland, Eretz Israel. That was what marked the difference.

Throughout centuries of exile, the Jew never forgot Zion. How could he forget such an important element of his ancient covenant with G-d? That is the true Zionism, and without that truth Herzl would have been but a brief footnote in dark and farfetched volume of historical curiosities.

Despite the exile imposed on the Jewish people, and despite the time and the distance, the Jew never left behind his link with the Promised Land. Every Jew that has recited even once in its lifetime his prayers with sincerity of the heart, has asked for the return of his people to the land of Israel, and for the reconstruction of Jerusalem, of the Temple, for the Redemption and for the true peace, the Divine Peace.

Responsabilidades, obligaciones, y la continuidad de los judíos

l judío es responsable por el cumplimiento de las obligaciones y preceptos de Di-s. Es imposible cumplir con la lista entera de las 613 mitzvot sin el retorno del judío a su tierra Israel, sin la redención y la Reconstrucción del Templo de Jerusalén.

El judío debe permanecer como tal, no debe perder su identidad ni asimilarse en las culturas del mundo. El judío debe velar por su pueblo, debe asegurarse de la continuidad judía por medio de sus descendientes, y no debe jamás apartarse de sus obligaciones.

El judío es siempre judío, y no debe nunca avergonzarse de serlo. No debe, jamás, negar el pacto con Di-s que tiene por herencia ancestral desde los remotos días de Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.

¡Que se vayan a la porra quienes nos acusan de complejos de inferioridad y/o superioridad! Somos, simplemente, responsables por la pesada carga que tenemos sobre nuestros hombros. No vamos a dejar que nos destruyan, o que nos arrebaten lo que es legítimamente nuestro.

Responsibilities, Obligations, and the Continuity of the Jews

The Jew is responsible for the fulfillment of the obligations and precepts of G-d. It is impossible to comply with the entire list of the 613 mitzvos without the return of the Jew to Israel, his land, without the Redemption and the reconstruction of the Jerusalem Temple.

The Jew must remain as such. He must neither lose his identity, nor assimilate into the cultures of the world. The Jew should keep watch over his people and insure Jewish continuity through his descendants, and must never depart from his duties.

A Jew is always a Jew, and must never be ashamed to be so. He ought never to deny the covenant with G-d that he has as a heritage since the forgone days of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

To heck with those who accuse us of inferiority and/or superiority complexes! We are simply responsible for the heavy burden that we carry on our shoulders. We are not going to let anyone destroy us, or snatch away from us that which is legitimately ours.

El judío frente a las naciones del mundo

Para con el gentil, el judío debe ser “una luz a las naciones”, como decía Isaías (42:6). El judío debe enseñar al mundo el pacto que toda la humanidad, descendiente de los hijos de Noé, tiene para con Di-s, y de los Siete Preceptos Universales (noájides) que este pacto acarrea.

Si el judío defiende su potestad sobre la Tierra de Israel, lo hace con pleno derecho, y lo que defiende es una necesidad vital. El rendir terreno alguno de la tierra concedida por Di-s es una flagrante invitación al derramamiento de sangre judía, porque cada codo cuadrado de Eretz Israel está ligado a una vida judía. El siquiera hablar de entregar terreno alguno pone en peligro la vidas de judíos por doquier, sea dentro o fuera de la Tierra de Israel.

Esta tesis, brillante y elocuentemente pronunciada por el Rebe de Lubávitch hace ya casi cuatro décadas, es una realidad tangible, y resulta más evidente hoy que nunca antes. Los “diálogos de paz” de la última década y media, y las trágicas y garrafalmente equivocadas concesiones territoriales – por muy “unilaterales” que puedan ser – han desembocado en la guerra. Aun quienes de algún modo obtuso consigan ver el debacle de la incompetencia de Olmert en el conflicto del Líbano como una victoria para Israel, no pueden negar que un millón de Israelíes abandonaron sus hogares por el temor – o la prudencia – de salirse del camino de los misiles Katiusha.

The Jew Before the Nations of the World

Before the gentiles, the Jew is to be “a light unto the nations”, as Isaiah said (42:6). The Jew must teach the world the covenant that all mankind, descendants of the children of Noah, have with G-d, and the Seven Universal (Noahide) Laws that this covenant contains.

When the Jew defends his legitimate possession of the Land of Israel, he does so with full right, and what he defends is a vital need. Yielding any part of the land granted by G-d is a flagrant invitation to the spilling of Jewish blood, because every square cubit of Eretz Israel is connected with a Jewish life. Even speaking of conceding any land endangers the lives of Jews everywhere, both in and outside the Land of Israel.

This thesis, brilliantly and eloquently pronounced by the Lubavitcher Rebbe almost four decades ago, is today a tangible reality, and becomes even more evident now than ever before. The “peace talks” of the last fifteen years, and the tragic and terribly mistaken territorial concessions – however “unilateral” they may have been – have lead us into war. Even those who, in some twisted way, manage to see the fiasco of Olmert’s incompetence during the Lebanon War as a victory for Israel, cannot deny that a million Israelis abandoned their homes due to fear – or sound judgment – getting out of the way of the Katyusha missiles.

Responsibilities and obligations of the gentile

And what about the gentiles? The non-Jews, whether in the Middle East or in any another place of the world, also have a commitment with G-d, a set of mitzvos with which to comply. The Seven Universal Laws, or Noahide Mitzvos, are the way to go for all human beings.

Un gobierno judío para el Estado Judío

Otro asunto mal entendido, por no decir completa y maliciosamente tergiversado, es el de la urgencia de modificar el sistema de gobierno de Israel.

Israel es el único país del mundo cuyo propósito desde la primera propuesta de su creación ha sido, y continua siendo hoy, el Estado Judío. Para esto, Israel debe ser un país propiamente judío, cuyo gobierno debe ser claramente judío. Israel no está allí para ser “un país de todos sus ciudadanos”, mientras su ciudadanía sea una mezcla de judíos y gentiles. Tal concepto, al que tan fuertemente se ha arraigado los “humanistas” y los liberales, encierra una condena de muerte al concepto del estado judío: si la población llegase a ser mayoritariamente gentil, y el sistema de gobierno auténticamente democrático, el país dejaría de ser Israel. Así de simple.

¿Propongo entonces una tiranía religiosa? No. Eso es lanzarse atolondradamente a conclusiones, sin antes distinguir entre el análisis de un problema y la propuesta a su solución.

Un gobierno de coerción religiosa duraría poco, y no ganaría una verdadera influencia en la población general de Israel – ni siquiera en la población judía. Es más: ningún partido político religioso en Israel posee un plan de gobierno. Los partidos políticos minoritarios en Israel cumplen con la función que en los Estados Unidos cumplen los lobbies: sirven a los intereses de un grupo determinado, no les concierne el efecto que puedan tener sobre el resto de la población, y su agenda política no incluye realmente el llegar a gobernar.

Sería mejor que no hubiese partidos políticos. Pero, dado que los hay, sería mejor contar con un partido orientado a gobernar, con una política clara de mantener al país como el único Estado Judío del mundo, y que no vuelva a cometer los errores garrafales de gobiernos anteriores: ¡No más concesiones territoriales a quienes tienen por razón de ser y objetivo supremo el asegurar nuestra destrucción!

A Jewish Government for the Jewish State

Another poorly understood, not to say completely and maliciously distorted, subject is that of the urgency to modify the system of government in Israel.

Israel is the only country in the world whose purpose, from the first proposal for its creation has been, and continuous to be today, the Jewish State. For this, Israel should be a properly Jewish country, whose government should be clearly Jewish. Israel is not there to be “a country of all its citizens,” while its citizenry is a mixture of Jews and gentiles. Such a concept, to which Liberals and “humanists” so steadfastly hold, imposes a death sentence for the notion of a Jewish State: if the majority of the population got to be gentile, and the system of government authentically democratic, the country would cease to be Israel. That simple.

Do I, then, propose a religious tyranny? Not so. That would be jumping hastily to conclusions, without before distinguishing between the analysis of a problem and the proposal for its solution.

A government of religious coercion would last a short time, and would not gain true influence on the general population of Israel – not even on the Jewish population. Moreover: no religious political party in Israel possesses a plan of government. Minority political parties in Israel fulfill a role played by lobbies in the United States: serving the interests of a specific group, without concern for the effect that they may have on the rest of the population, and their political agenda does not include a prospect to govern.

It would be better if there were no political parties. But, given that there are, it is desirable to count on a party oriented to govern, with a clear policy of keeping the country as the only Jewish State in the world, and of not ever again committing the terrible errors of previous governments: No more territorial concessions to those whose supreme purpose and reason of existence is to insure our destruction!

Sheleimut HaAretz: la entereza de la Tierra de Israel

Un elemento esencial en el juego de responsabilidades del judío es el de la integridad. No se trata solamente de una integridad moral, aunque esta es en verdad una parte fundamental de este concepto. La triple integridad que el judío lleva sobre sus hombros es la integridad de su pueblo, de la Torá, y de la sacra tierra de Israel. En hebreo esto es llamado שלימות העם, שלימות התורה, ושלימות הארץ. Sobre este tema no hay mejor expositor entre todos los sabios del pueblo judío que el Rebe de Lubávitch.

Muchos eruditos han enfocado el tema desde un punto de vista meramente ideológico. A esto, se suscitó una brecha que divide al campo observante en dos sectores: el del sionismo religioso, y el del antisionismo. Para los primeros, El Estado de Israel es, de por si, el Inicio de la Redención. Tal concepto está claramente expresado en la plegaria que el Rabinato Mayor de Israel compuso durante la Guerra de Independencia, en las palabras ראשית צמיחת גאלתינו, “inicio de nuestra redención”, que acompañan a la mención del Estado de Israel en esa plegaria.

Por el otro lado, una sección importante del mundo judío observante se rehúsa a pronunciar esa plegaria. Si bien la tenencia judía de la Tierra de Israel ha de llevar a la redención, el Estado en si no es sagrado. Es más, la continua insistencia en definirlo como un estado moderno, humanista, universal, y como el estado de todos sus ciudadanos, amenaza gravemente en hacer de lado con la mismísima fundación del Estado Judío. Repito: si la mayoría de los ciudadanos políticamente activos de Israel fuesen gentiles – cosa que bien puede estar en camino a suceder – el Estado de Israel dejaría de ser, tal y cual, el Estado de Israel.

Aun más, el Estado que traiciona a sus ciudadanos judíos que, en su mejor entender de la observancia judía, cumplen con el deber judío de asentarse en toda la Tierra de Israel... ese estado es más que profano.

Una minoría en el mundo judío observante exige la destrucción del Estado de Israel para reemplazarlo por un país árabe. Para esta minoría, caracterizada por una secta llamada Neturei Karta, el pecado del sionismo político – sea religioso o laico – no es rescatable de modo alguno. Sin embargo la legitimidad de esta visión es, por lo menos, cuestionable.

Para el Rebe, el asunto no es ideológico. Se trata meramente de una cuestión de supervivencia. Es un asunto de vida o muerte.

El Estado de Israel cumple una función temporaria, o por lo menos debe cumplirla. Si este dejase de existir, especialmente de la manera repentina como los Neturei Karta piden, la debacle sería catastrófica. Toda concesión de territorio sagrado – la Tierra de Israel es indiscutiblemente sagrada – tiene repercusiones directas en la integridad física del pueblo judío. Por lo tanto el deber del Estado de Israel es el proteger a la Tierra de Israel y mantenerla en manos judías hasta la venida del Mashíaj y de la Redención.

Sheleimus HaAretz: the Wholeness of the Land of Israel

An essential element in the set of responsibilities of the Jew is that of integrity. It is not only about a moral integrity, although this is indeed a fundamental part of this concept. The triple integrity that the Jew carries on his shoulders is the integrity of his People, of the Torah, and of the Holy Land of Israel. In Hebrew this is expressed as שלימות העם, שלימות התורה, ושלימות הארץ. On this subject there is no better spokesman among all the sages of the Jewish people than the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Many scholars have approached this subject from a merely ideological point of view. Due to this, a gap was forged, dividing the religious camp into two sectors: that of religious Zionism, and that of anti-Zionism. For the earlier, The State of Israel is, in-and-of-itself, the Beginning of the Redemption. Such a concept is clearly expressed in the prayer that the Chief Rabbinate of Israel composed during the War of Independence, in the words ראשית צמיחת גאלתינו, “the beginning of our redemption”, that go along with the mention of the State of Israel in that prayer.

On the other hand, an important section of the Jewish religious world refuses to recite that prayer. Though the Jewish possession of the Land of Israel should lead to the Redemption, the State per se is not holy. Moreover, the continuous insistence in defining it as a modern state, humanist, universal, and as the state of all its citizens, seriously threatens to do away with the very foundations of the Jewish State. I repeat: if the majority of the politically active citizens of Israel were gentiles – which may very well be on the way to happening – the State of Israel would cease to be, as such, the State of Israel.

Moreover, the State that betrays its Jewish citizens that, in their best understanding of Jewish observance, fulfill the Jewish duty to settle in all the Land of Israel... that state is more than unholy.

A minority in the observant Jewish world demands the destruction of the State of Israel, to replace it with an Arab country. For this minority, characterized by a sect known as the Neturei Karta, the sin of political Zionism, whether religious or secular, is unsalvageable in every way. Yet, the legitimacy of this view is, to say the least, questionable.

For the Rebbe, this is not an ideological issue. It is, rather, a question of survival. It is a matter of life and death.

The State of Israel fulfils a temporary function, or at least should fulfill it. If Israel were to cease to exist, especially in the sudden way that the Neturei Karta demand, the ensuing disaster would be catastrophic. Every concession of sacred territory – the Land of Israel is indisputably holy – has direct repercussions on the physical integrity of the Jewish people. It is, thus, the duty of the State of Israel to protect the Land of Israel and to keep her in Jewish hands until the coming of Moshiach and the Redemption

Así pues, la idea detrás de la política de “territorios por paz” nunca ha partido de una premisa real. Su racional es el mismo de aquella absurda exposición lógica que concluye en que los chanchos vuelan: si todos los animales alados vuelan, y los chanchos tienen alas, entonces los chanchos vuelan – una conclusión lógica basada en premisas erróneas.

Ciertamente, ni todos los animales alados vuelan, ni los puercos poseen alas. Y ciertamente, las concesiones
territoriales de sucesivos regimenes en Israel no han producido paz alguna, y en vez de eso han fortalecido y envalentonado al delirio árabe de destruir a Israel y “arrojar a los judíos al mar”.

El Rebe advirtió sobre tal racionamiento erróneo desde que este empezó a surgir en las mentes de los políticos israelíes. La primera advertencia fue a los pocos días de la victoria de la Guerra de los Seis Días. Aun antes de que se pronunciara la idea de que los territorios liberados pudiesen ser usados en negociaciones futuras como un elemento de trueque a cambio de la paz, el Rebe anunció que el mero hablar del asunto pondría a vidas judías en peligro.

Hoy esto no es más un concepto abstracto o profético. Es una realidad a ser contemplada en el curso de hechos de los últimos años. Israel ha sufrido levantamientos árabes – guerras libradas desde el interior de Eretz Israel por un enemigo que se supo abrir camino. Un enemigo en el Caballo de Troya bajo la cubierta de una ilusión, ese mal llamado “proceso de paz”, y ha de tal modo le fue permitido montar a lo largo de Israel hacia la mismísima Jerusalén. Israel acaba de sufrir una guerra que, por primera vez en su historia, sembró el pánico sobre un millón de sus habitantes en toda la región norte del país. Todo por el haber concedido territorios.

En concreto, la retirada del Líbano en el año 2000, y la rendición de Gush Katif el año pasado, dieron lugar a que se levantaran enemigos aun peores que los que previamente
habían amenazado a Israel. Hamás tomó el poder completamente sobre los árabes de los territorios – ¡Que error tan grave fue el darles autonomía en un primer lugar! – y Hizbalá se instaló en el sur del Líbano con armamentos demoníacos que ha costado sangre judía confrontar.

Al mando de nuestros enemigos se levanta hoy el régimen de Irán, cuyo presidente no hace esfuerzo alguno en ocultar sus verdaderas intenciones: borrar a Israel del mapa.

Cause and Effect

Hence, the idea behind the policy of “land for peace” simply does not begin from a true premise. Its rationale is the same as that of the absurd logical expounding that concludes that pigs fly: if all winged animals fly, and pigs have wings, then pigs fly – a conclusion based on wrong premises.

Certainly, all winged animals do not fly, nor do pigs possess wings. And certainly, the territorial concessions of successive governments of Israel have not produced any peace. Instead, they have strenghtened and encouraged the Arab delirium of destroying Israel and “throwing the Jews into the sea.”

The Rebbe warned of such erroneous rationale from the moment it started to arise in the minds of Israeli politicians. The first warning came a few days after of the victory of the Six Day War. Even before the announcement of the idea that the Liberated Territories could be used in future negotiations as a bargain element in exchange for peace. The Rebbe warned that even speaking of such matters would place Jewish lives in danger.

Today this is no longer an abstract or prophetic concept. It is a reality to be contemplated along with the course of events of recent years. Israel has suffered Arab uprisings – wars fought from within the interior of Eretz Israel by an enemy that has learned to force its way. They have mounted a Trojan Horse concealed by an illusion, that misnomer of a “peace process,” and have thus been allowed to ride throughout Israel and straight toward Jerusalem itself. Israel has just suffered a war that, for the first time in its history, drove a million of its inhabitants in the entire northern region of the country into panic. All this, due to territorial concessions.

In concrete, the retreat from Lebanon in 2000, and the surrender of Gush Katif a year ago, gave place to the rise of even worse enemies than those which had threatened Israel before. Hamas rose to complete power over the Arabs of the territories – what a serious mistake it was to give them autonomy in the first place! – and Hizballah positioned its hosts in the south of Lebanon with demonic weaponry. Confronting them has been paid with Jewish blood.

In command of our enemies stands today the hate-mongering regime of Iran, whose president makes no effort to hide his true intentions: to erase to Israel from the map.

Conclusión: ni crueldad ni fascismo, sino la mayor de las piedades

El pueblo judío y el Estado de Israel deben protegerse mutuamente. Es el deber de todo judío el exigir que Israel no vuelva a cometer la barbaridad de conceder territorios al enemigo. Es el deber de todo judío el oponerse con todo lo que le sea posible a todo gobierno que se atreva a insistir en semejante aberración.

Dice en el Zohar que “aquel que es piadoso con los crueles, acaba siendo cruel con los justos”. Para que Israel sea el país de los judíos, no debe jamás acometer contra su heroica y sacrificada población judía de los territorios liberados. Todo lo contrario, Israel debe defender y proteger a esa población con todas sus capacidades. La amenaza enemiga solo puede ser encarada atacándola. El enemigo que procura nuestra destrucción como objetivo supremo no podrá ser apaciguado con un aperitivo territorial. Es ese enemigo al que hay que expulsar – y no al sacrificado y fiel poblador
judío.

El Estado de Israel debe educar a su población judía sobre lo que es el ser judío. No propongo coerción religiosa, que es por lo demás totalmente contraproducente, sino el encontrar la forma de inculcar valores auténticamente judíos en la población judía general. Todo judío que aprenda a amar al judaísmo será el mejor defensor de su pueblo, de su patria, y de su Torá.

Conclusion: Neither Cruelty, Nor Fascism, but the Greatest of Loving-Kindness

The Jewish people and the State of Israel must protect each other. It is the duty of every Jew to demand that Israel shall not commit again the barbarity to grant territories to the enemy. It is the duty of every Jew to oppose in every possible way every government that dares to insist on similar aberrations.

It says in the Zohar that “he who is merciful with the cruel, will end up being cruel with the merciful.” In order for Israel to be the country of the Jews, it must never commit an attack against the heroic and sacrificed Jewish population of the Liberated Territories. On the contrary, Israel must defend and protect that population with all its might. The threat posed by the enemy can only be confronted by attacking it. The enemy that seeks our destruction as its supreme goal shall never be appeased with a territorial gesture. That is the enemy that must be expelled – and not the sacrificed and faithful Jewish settler.

The State of Israel ought to educate
its Jewish population about what it is to be Jewish. I do not propose religious coercion, which is most certainly counterproductive, but rather, to find the way to instill authentically Jewish values in the general Jewish population. Every Jew that learns to love Jewishness shall be the best defender of his people, of his country, and of his Torah.

No hay mayor amor que el amor de Israel אהבת ישראל – – y a su debido tiempo todos, judíos y gentiles, sabrán apreciarlo y retribuir con la paz. Aun más, al abrir los ojos el judío podrá vislumbrar al Mashíaj, que acaba de voltear la esquina, y se dirige apresuradamente hacia nos.

There is no greater love that the love of Israel אהבת ישראל – – and in due time all, Jew and gentile, shall learn to appreciate this and to reciprocate with peace. Moreover, upon opening his eyes the Jew shall be able to glimpse Moshiach, who has just turned the corner, and is hastily heading our way.

En estos momentos el mundo debate sobre el poder real de Israel. En 1967 una guerra increíble contra las huestes árabes de 5 países fue ganada en 6 legendarios días. Hoy en día, a 39 años de esa guerra, Israel acaba de librar la Guerra de los 34 Días. Durante seis de esos días, todo el poderío de Israel a manos de Ehud Olmert no pudo derrotar a un miserable caserío como Bint Yabel. Y al empezar el trigésimo quinto día, Hizbalá celebra el alto al fuego como una victoria. ¿Qué pasa con Israel? Veamos lo que la Torá nos dijo en la parashá de la semana pasada:		These moments the world debates about the real power of Israel. In 1967 an unbelievable war was won against the hosts of 5 Arab countries, in only 6 legendary days. Now, 39 years later, Israel has just fought the 34 Days War. Y digo yo… Queda claro de los versículos de arriba que los territorios de Judea y Samaria son tan judíos como toda Eretz Israel, que el Estado Judío solo sobrevivirá si se define realmente como tal, que de la teshuvá del pueblo judío depende el porvenir de la nación, y que protegernos del Líbano, del “desierto”, y de cualquier parte, depende realmente de nuestra actitud con Di-s y su Torá. Nada de eso es viable con un gobierno de Kadima. ¡Es hora de un cambio mayor de dirección en Israel!		And I say… It is clear from the verses above that the territorios of Judea and Samaria are just as Jewish as all of Eretz Yisrael, that the Jewish state Hill only survive if it is truly defined as such, that the future of the nation depends on the teshuvah of the Jewish people, and that our protection from Lebanon, from the “desert”, and from anywhere else, truly depends from our attitude with G-d and His Torah. None of that is viable under a Kadima government. It is time for a major change of direction in Israel!

No voy a sentarme a cantar la vieja canción del “te lo advertí”, aunque quien haya seguido mi prédica en este blog sabe muy bien que esto se veía venir desde lejos. Si Barak y Sharón no hubiesen rendido territorio al enemigo, y si Olmert no estuviese aun anunciando a voz en cuello que todavía tiene la intención de rendir más de los territorios liberados en 1967, no habría hoy esta guerra. Más bien, en estos momentos todos sentimos el deber de asistir a quienes más lo necesitan.

La población de las zonas donde caen los cohetes y misiles a diario está pasando momentos muy difíciles. Muchos han optado por irse a terreno más seguro, otros pasan día y noche en los refugios antiaéreos.

Muchísima gente no puede ir a trabajar, o a comprar comida. No se diga lo que es tener a niños pequeños en medio de todo esto.

Colel Jabad, la caridad organizada más antigua de Israel, sin dejar de cumplir con sus labores cotidianas asistiendo a los indigentes y necesitados en Israel, ha lanzado una campaña de asistencia humanitaria sin precedentes.

I am not going to sing that old song “I told you so,” even though whomever has been following my preaching in this blog is very well aware that this could be seeing coming from far away. If Barak and Sharon hadn’t surrender territory to the enemy, and if Olmert weren’t still now announcing out loud that he stills has the intentions of surrendering further parts of the territories liberated in 1967, this war would simply no exist. Rather, in these moments, we all feel the duty to help those who need it the most.

The population of the areas where rockets and missiles fall daily is going through very difficult moments. Many have opted for leaving toward safer terrain; others spend day and night in bomb shelters.

Great many people cannot go to work, or even shopping for food. It goes without saying what it must be like to have small children in the midst of it all.

Collel Chabad, Israel’s oldest organized charity, without ceasing to fulfill its regular duties of helping the poor and needy of Israel, has launched an unprecedented campaign of humanitarian assistance.

Every donation, however small, shall be very much appreciated. All gathered monies will go directly to those who need them most.

Given that the number of internal refugees has reached nearly a million, the need is overwhelming.

Palabra de HaShem en la tierra de Hadraj y en Damasco: «A HaShem deben mirar los ojos de los hombres y todas las tribus de Israel. También Hamat [en pronunciación ashkenazí “Hamás”] que está en su frontera, y Tiro y Sidón, aunque sean muy sabias. Tiro se edificó fortaleza, y amontonó plata como polvo y oro como lodo de las calles, pero el Señor la empobrecerá, hundirá en el mar su poderío y será consumida por el fuego.		The burden of a word of HaShem against the land of Hadrach, and Damascus -- his place of rest: «When to HaShem [is] the eye of man, And of all the tribes of Israel. And upon Hamath [in Ashkenazic pronunciation “Hamas”] too, which borders on it, and upon Tyre and Sidon, though they are very skillful. Tyre has built herself a stronghold; she has heaped up silver like dust, and gold like the dirt of the streets. But the HaShem will take away her possessions and destroy her power on the sea, and she will be consumed by fire.

Lo verá Ashquelón y temerá; Gaza también, y se dolerá mucho; asimismo Ecrón, porque su esperanza será confundida. Perecerá el rey de Gaza, y Ashquelón no será habitada. Habitará en Ashdod un bastardo, y pondré fin a la soberbia de los filisteos. Quitaré la sangre de su boca y sus abominaciones de entre sus dientes. Quedará también un resto para nuestro Di-s; serán como capitanes en Judá, y Ecrón será como el jebuseo.		Ashkelon will see it and fear; Gaza will writhe in agony, and Ekron too, for her hope will wither. Gaza will lose her king and Ashkelon will be deserted. A bastard will occupy Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Philistines. I will take the blood from their mouths, the forbidden food from between their teeth. Those who are left will belong to our God and become leaders in Judah, and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.

Entonces montaré guardia alrededor de mi Casa, para que ninguno vaya ni venga. No pasará más sobre ellos el opresor, porque ahora vigilo con mis ropios ojos.		But I will defend my house against marauding forces. Never again will an oppressor overrun my people, for now I am keeping watch.

Al empezar el noveno día del mes de Av, ayunamos y guardamos duelo por la destrucción del Templo de Jerusalén y el exilio del pueblo judío. Pero al mismo tiempo rogamos por el fin de todos nuestros males, y la pronta llegada de nuestra redención.		Beginning the ninth day of the month of Av, we fast and observe mourning for the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple and the exile of the Jewish people. But at the same time we ask for the end of all our afflictions, and for the prompt arrival of our redemption.
Nuestra redención está en nuestras manos. La visión de Zejaria (Zacarías) nos indica el camino, bien podemos estar en rumbo a la Gueulá. Todos los elementos están reunidos: el fuego sobre las ciudades del Líbano, el ataque contra Ashkelón y ciudades adyacentes, y el terror de Gaza tras la respuesta. El “mamzer” que gobierna desde el lado judío, que el Targum traduce como “casa de Israel” – a mi parecer, una referencia al traicionero gobierno de Israel que en el ardor de la batalla sigue planeando expulsar a los residentes judíos de Judea y Samaria. A fin de cuentas, el pueblo de Israel puede hacer teshuvá, y regir gloriosa y soberanamente sobre toda Eretz Yisrael.		Our redemption is in our hands. The vision of Zechariah shows us the path, we may well be on our way to the Geulah. All the elements are gathered: fire over the cities of Lebanon, attacks against Ashkelon and adjacent cities, and the terror of Gaza after the reply. The “momzer” that rules the Jewish side, which the Targum renders as “the House of Israel” – seems to me a clear reference to the traitor government of Israel that, in the heat of the battle, still plans to expel the Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria. At the end of the day, the Jewish people can do tshuvah and rule gloriously and with full sovereignty over all of Eretz Yisroel.
Depende de nosotros. El ayuno bien podría convertirse en un día festivo en el que celebremos la caída de todos nuestros enemigos, y de los mamzerim que abusan del poder dentro de nuestras fronteras. ¡Que así sea!		It is up to us. The fast may very well become a festive day in which we celebrate the fall of all our enemies, and of the momzeirim that abuse power within our borders. May it indeed be so!

.El año pasado cité la ordenanza (tzivui) de la Torá que concierne a la expulsión de los habitantes gentiles de la tierra de Israel cuando el pueblo judío entra a esta. Según el Rambán, Najmánides, es en realidad un precepto (mitzvá) y el Rambam, Maimónides, debería haberlo incluido en el Séfer HaMitzvot. Reglón seguido la Torá continúa (Bamidbar/Números 34:1-15):		Last year I quoted the Torah ordinance (tzivui) that concerns the expulsion of the gentile inhabitants of the land of Israel when the Jewish people enter it. According to the Ramban – Nachmanides – it is actually a precept (mitzvah) which the Rambam – Maimonides – ought to have included in the Sefer HaMitzvos. In the very next paragraph, the Torah continues (Bamidbar /Numbers 34:1-15):

*Y habló HaShem* a Moisés, diciendo: Manda a los hijos de Israel y diles: “Cuando entréis en la tierra de Canaán, esta es la tierra que os tocará como herencia, la tierra de Canaán según sus fronteras. Vuestro límite sur será desde el desierto de Tzin, por la frontera de Edom, y vuestra frontera sur será desde el extremo del Mar Salado (el Mar Muerto) hacia el oriente. Luego, vuestra frontera cambiará de dirección, del sur a maalé Acrabim y continuará a Tzin, y su término será al sur de Kadesh-Barnea; y llegará a Jazar-Adar y continuará hasta Atzmón. Y la frontera cambiará de dirección de Atzmón al río de Egipto (Nájal Mitzraim), y su término será el mar. En cuanto a la frontera occidental, tendréis el Mar Grande (el Mediterráneo), esto es, su costa; esta será vuestra frontera occidental. Y esta será vuestra frontera norte: trazaréis la línea fronteriza desde el Mar Grande hasta el monte Hor. Trazaréis una línea desde el monte Hor hasta Lavó-Jamat, y el término de la frontera será Tzedad; y la frontera seguirá hacia Zifrón, y su término será Jatzar-Einán. Esta será vuestra frontera norte. Para vuestra frontera oriental, trazaréis también una línea desde Jatzar-Einán hasta Shefam, y la frontera descenderá de Shefam a Rivlá, sobre el lado oriental de Ain; y la frontera descenderá y alcanzará la ribera sobre el lado oriental del mar Kinéret. Y la frontera descenderá al Jordán, y su término será el Mar Salado (Mar Muerto). Esta será vuestra tierra, según sus fronteras alrededor.”** Entonces Moisés dio órdenes a los hijos de Israel, diciendo: “Esta es la tierra que repartiréis por sorteo entre vosotros como posesión, la cual HaShem ha ordenado dar a las nueve tribus y a la media tribu. Pues la tribu de los hijos de Rubén ha recibido lo suyo según sus casas paternas, y la tribu de los hijos de Gad según sus casas paternas y la media tribu de Manasés han recibido su posesión”. Las dos tribus y la media tribu han recibido su posesión al otro lado del Jordán, frente a Jericó, al oriente, hacia la salida del sol. .		. HaShem spoke to Moses saying: Command the Children of Israel and say to them: “'When you enter Canaan, the land that will be allotted to you as an inheritance will have these boundaries: Your southern side will include some of the Desert of Tzin along the border of Edom. On the east, your southern boundary will start from the end of the Salt (Dead) Sea, cross south of Maale Akrabim, continue on to Tzin and go south of Kadesh Barnea. Then it will go to Chatzar Adar and over to Atzmon, where it will turn, join the River of Egypt (Nachal Mitzrayim) and end at the Sea. Your western boundary will be the coast of the Great Sea (the Mediterranean). This will be your boundary on the west. For your northern boundary, run a line from the Great Sea to Mount Hor and from Mount Hor to Lavo-Chamat. Then the boundary will go to Tzedad, continue to Ziphron and end at Chatzar Enan. This will be your boundary on the north. For your eastern boundary, run a line from Chatzar Enan to Shepham. The boundary will go down from Shepham to Rivlah on the east side of Ayin and continue along the slopes east of the Sea of Kinneret. Then the boundary will go down along the Jordan and end at the Salt (Dead) Sea. This will be your land, with its boundaries on every side.” Moses commanded the Children of Israel saying: Assign this land by lot as an inheritance. HaShem has ordered hat it be given to the nine and a half tribes, because the families of the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance. These two and a half tribes have received their inheritance on the east side of the Jordan of Jericho, toward the sunrise.

. El estudio de las fronteras de Eretz Israel es de gran importancia. Primeramente, hay que saber adonde se ha de implementar el precepto que antecede, que cité el año pasado. También, claro, para saber donde corresponde observar todas las mitzvot que solo se pueden cumplir en la Tierra de Israel. Estos días es particularmente importante entender porqué es tan profundamente equívoco el entregar territorios de Eretz Israel a manos no judías. La Torá nos advierte de cuan grave es el castigo oor hacer tal cosa. Y aprendiendo de lo citado arriba, vemos qué territorios NO se deben entregar bajo ninguna circunstancia. Hoy está clarísimo que la entrega de territorios a quienes no corresponden al sorteo de tierras (es decir, a quienes no son judíos), aun cuando se hizo en nombre de la paz y la seguridad, lo que nos trajo es lo contrario de ambas cosas. ¿Cuándo vamos a aprender?		. Debido a la situación me veo en el deber de expresar mi apoyo y solidaridad con todos los residentes judíos de la región del norte de la Galilea. El gobierno de Kadima es responsable por haber dedicado el último par de años a usar las fuerzas del país a reprimir a sus propios ciudadanos. Hoy pagamos las consecuencias. No queda alternativa que tener que deshacer lo andado, tomar de vuelta la zona donde quedaba Gush Katif, y volver a entrar al sur del Líbano. Con Hamás y con Hizbalá no hay más que hacer, sino ponerlos fuera de combate y de patitas en la calle, cueste lo que cueste. Si se les deja seguir, los misiles van a llegar a Tel Aviv y a Jerusalén. Ya han llegado a Haifa.

A mis hermanos en el Galil, valor y coraje. ¡Di-s está con ustedes!

Given the present situation, I see it my duty to express my support and solidarity with all the Jewish residents of the Northern Galilee. The Kadima government is responsible for having wasted the last couple of years using the country’s forces against her very own citizens. Today we are paying the consequences. There is no alternative left, but having to un-walk the walked route, take back the area where Gush Katif stood, and re-enter Southern Lebanon. With Hamas and Hezbollah there is nothing else to do, but to put them out of order and kick them out on the street, whatever it takes to accomplish that. If they were left alone, their missiles will soon reach Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. They’ve already reached Haifa.

To all my brethren in the Galil: Courage and strength, G-d is with you!
