At the Crossroads of Our Survival / En la encrucijada de nuestra supervivencia

The long history of a people that sprouts from a single family, thirty seven centuries ago, is not free from the onslaught of recurrent threats to its very existence. The great paradox of its survival, the Jewish People is instructed not to rely on miracles, yet survives through a permanent miracle.

Within the scope of memory, a memory of witnesses and protagonists still alive as these lines are being written, two major instances have defied the survival of the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: the Holocaust, and Assimilation. These two palpable realities sum up the two necessary elements necessary for Jewish survival: the physical and the spiritual realms.

Yet, before our very eyes, new threats are rising, yet again. We are not to rely on miracles. We are not to assume victory before we’ve fought the battle and experienced victory. We are not to sleep on the laurels we’ve earned in past struggles, or to rely on prayer alone.

For almost 60 years the Jewish People have counted with the physical establishment of a Jewish government on the land of Israel. For over – just over – 40 years that establishment has included the core of our G-d given (and G-d promised) land. But a devastating malady is eating us inside out, and corroding the very foundations of such a concept.

Let us understand: It so happens that every Jew's life is connected to the land of Israel, wherever in the world that Jew may be. The year that has just started in the Jewish calendar, 5768, is a Sabbatical year, a Shmitah year. During this year, the seventh of a recurrent cycle kept since the revelation of the Torah thirty three centuries ago, the Land of Israel must rest. That means that agricultural work on Jewish-owned land in Eretz Yisrael must cease for the whole year.

Debts accumulated during this year are transferred to a Beit Din, a rabbinical court that will be in charge of seeing them paid. That makes sense for Jews living in the Land of Israel, and working in the land. Yet Jews in the Diaspora have, just as well, signed the pruzbul document of debt-transferring just before Rosh HaShanah.

Why would Jews outside of the land of Israel sign a pruzbul? Because it is implicit that the Jews belong to a specific piece of territory in Eretz Yisrael, which is never smaller than four square cubits per person.

When the land already redeemed by being in Jewish property is handed over to gentiles; whether as a sale, or as a part of an agreement, or even as a loss of war; the Jewish lives connected to that parcel of land are immediately put in danger. We may or may not see that connection in a physical way. The physical aspect of our survival constitutes, as mentioned above, only one dimension. But the connection between the land and our physical survival is empirically evident.

When we were precipitated into the present Exile, some nineteen centuries ago, an enormous amount of lost Jewish lives paved the roads out of the Land of Israel.

Today, every time our land is given
away, surrendered, our even spoken of with that intention on our lips, our lives are in danger.

And so, the very concept of “land-for-peace” is fraudulent. Moreover, it is contrary to truth. In order to achieve True Peace the land of Israel must remain in Jewish hands.

Hence the threat we face today. The government of Israel – yes, the democratically elected, and popularly detested government of the State of Israel – has offered in writing to give away almost the entirety of the territories liberated in the miraculous Six-Day War, including half of Jerusalem!

And we hear from a government in the land where Haman and Achashverosh once plotted the annihilation of the Jewish people. Their physical threat: to erase from the map our possession of our land. All the nightmares we once thought gone are back: weapons of mass destruction, massive extermination of Jews, a powerful army capable of standing up to us, and a complex switch of world power that may leave us facing the enemy without any friendly nation coming to our aid.

We must remember that essential axiom: not to rely on miracles. That is to say, we are not to expect anything good to come from keeping silent, from allowing confusion, fear, or from absurd and paralyzing moral relativism.

Do not ask me how it is that all our lives are in danger. I will not tell you who may bring death to our doorposts, or how. I would rather not make cheshbonot, frivolous or arrogant calculations, attempting to answer that. The fact is that if we simply sit still and allow the farce of “peace process” to go on, we will have no one but ourselves to blame for the disaster coming our way when the events unfold.

There is simply no threat big enough to intimidate us into silence when our lives, the lives of our brethren, the lives of our children and loved ones, are so blatantly being put in danger by a blind and foolish government: the government of Israel.

I call upon each and every one reading these lines to raise their voices in protest, and to do everything within their power to stop the horrors of land surrender. Don’t be fooled by the cunning enchantment of those who in vain offer peace. They have never been able to deliver what they so deceitfully put forward, and this time around will be no exception.

For our survival, for the sake of the Jewish people, and for the sake of True Peace in the world, denounce, protest, and do all you can to stop the surrender of Judea, Samaria, and the east side of Jerusalem. Countless generations in the future will thank us for having done so.

Actually, land-for-peace is mentioned in the Torah, in Shoftim. The king of Amon tells Yiphtach that he will make peace with Israel if they return the stolen lands. Obviously, Yiptach rejected that and made war and defeated Amon. If only we had a Yiphtach today...

bar-kochba seems to be right on though I know very little about what the Tanach or the Talmud teaches us. There have been those strong enough to stand up to our enemies and this kind of leadership is sorely missed right now.

Mr. Rabinovich: exceptional post! Kol ha'kavod!

Sr. R.

Atentos saludos,
